Local Businesses support NetDay with Financial & Merchandise Donations

Westford business' support of NetDay speeds ahead with additional financial donations from Cascade, Davox, Fleet Bank, Century 21 Heritage, Powersoft and Mack Technologies. A Sun Microsystems grant has provided us with our server and an equipment donation from 3 Com provides the Abbott School with additional opportunities for learning. Donations of food and beverages from Pizza Hut and Dunkin' Donuts for NetDay continue to emerge, demonstrating the community's commitment to give Westford schools their connection to the internet -- and to the world.

"The partnership of companies such as Mack Technologies is critical to our success. Westford businesses have been extremely supportive of our community and our stdents," indicates Beth Peterson, Co-chairperson for Westford Networks for Education and Technology (WestNET). "Ian McWatt from Mack Techologies is on our Board of Directors and this demonstrates that their participation in WestNET goes beyond October 26 [NetDay '96]."

The "Adopt a School" and "Adopt a Student" programs offer varying degrees of sponsorship for both residents and businesses. Several Westford individuals have also made contributions that will enable students to excel via the information highway.

WestNET was formed to support education and technology in Westford Public Schools. With an October 26 target date for installation, WestNET is participating in the State of Massachusetts NetDay effort to provide tools for students and teachers to succeed in the 21st century via the internet. Tax-deductible donations will be used to purchase computer equipment, cable, software and instruction for use by students in the Westford Public Schools.

Additionally, over 150 residents have volunteered to be a part of the actual installation for NetDay which will put the first classrooms on the net at noon on Saturday, October 26. Schools statewide are participating in the event, and Boston television networks will be airing the progression during the day.

Additional volunteers -- whether technical or not -- are still needed. The volunteer orientation took place on Tuesday, September 24 at the Blanchard School. If you're interested in volunteering and haven't spoken to someone from NetDay, please contact Janet Tortora (692-7273) or Beth Peterson (392-0925).
