Drills were creating holes in the concrete, steel beams and floors at the Abbott & Day Schools this week in preparation for final connectivity for NetDay, October 26. Volunteers who specified that their skills lay anywhere from carpentry to electrical work to general handi-person were on hand beginning last week to begin the work that will enable these schools to be connected to the Internet on Massachusetts (and Westford) NetDay. Piping, wiring, junction boxes, and raceways to house the wires are beginning to appear in classrooms, hallways, libraries and computer labs townwide. "Many members of the community have come forth to offer their expertise
their time, their money and their enthusiasm for this project," said Janet Tortora, co-chair of the project. "People like Richie Crocker have organized groups of experts to donate their time to specialized aspects of wiring. Many individuals have given many hours to this project because there is a commitment to make this community a leader in technology." Tortora adds that these are not just people with children in the schools, but people who see the necessity of technology. "We can't thank our volunteers and donors enough for the effort they've made so far. Westford is lucky to have such generous and hardworking citizens willing to give their valuable evenings and weekends to make this project a success," volunteer coordinator Charlie Rusman adds. "And maybe the best part is that they're having fun doing it!" WestNET was formed to support education and technology in Westford Public Schools. With an October 26 target date for installation, WestNET is participating in the State of Massachusetts NetDay effort to provide tools for students and teachers to succeed in the 21st century via the internet. Tax-deductible donations will be used to purchase computer equipment, cable, software and instruction for use by students in the Westford Public Schools. Additionally, over 150 residents have volunteered to be a part of the actual installation for NetDay which will put the first classrooms on the net at noon on Saturday, October 26. Schools statewide are participating in the event. Additional volunteers -- whether technical or not -- are still needed for the installation on NetDay or to assist with post-installation celebrations. If you are interested in assisting with NetDay and haven't spoken to someone from NetDay, please contact Janet Tortora (692-7273) or Beth Peterson (392-0925).
